Dear Weary Mom

Dear Weary Mom,

You have been on my mind for a while now.  I have been thinking about what to write you for two days now.  I haven't blogged in months because I am having issues loading photos.  Tonight the Lord brought me to the end of myself so that I could share how "Hope for the Weary Mom" has made such a difference in my life.

I will not go into details of what is making me weary.  You know.  You are there too.  It could be financial, relationships, children, a season of life, too much on the go, or a combination of many things that has brought you to this weary place.  YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!  This was one of the most powerful things that hit me and made a difference when I did this study (twice now).  I have God with me always and hundreds, probably millions, of other weary moms going through the exact same things I am.

Tonight I was making homemade yogurt after a fail attempt last weekend.  Let's just say that using a Canadian thermometer and and American recipe meant I was trying for hours to get my milk hotter than it could and ruined another batch of rather hard to find and expensive ingredients (for where I live).  That was what threw me over the edge.  I burst into tears and collapsed on the couch.  My poor young boys tried to cheer me up.  My older son (4.5years old) offered some encouraging words of not giving up and trying again.  My younger son (2.5years old) brought me a toy and a drink of water.  After a not so kindly worded reminder even helped get ready for bed.

While I was flaked out on the couch (really it was only for like 3 min) voices filled my head:
"I can't believe you messed up again"
"You can't afford to be wasting money like this"
"Your kids are watching"
"You still have to clean up the mess in the kitchen, and fold laundry"
"Hey what about xyz that you still haven't done today"
"I went to all this trouble to make this for my boys."
"I will never figure out what their digestive issues are."
"I should just give up and quite trying so hard with everything"
"Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets. Luke 5:5"

That last voice cut through my pain.  I remembered reading about Peter's fishing experience in "Hope for the Weary Mom".  Then other verses and things I had read came to mind.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthen me."
"Do not grow weary of doing good."
" I am not alone"
" Maybe I'm just tired"
"Perhaps God is using this experience for something good"
"Hey I could write about this"

Well I got up and got the boys to bed.  I determined to take just one more step.  My boys were so sweet with their prayers too.  Then I came write over to write to you.

Honestly I can tell you that last year I would have sobbed for ages, screamed at the kids while getting them into bed, cried out the the Lord in anger and held a grudge for a few days. The difference?  My new found hope.  Over the last 10 weeks I have been constantly reminded of how much I am loved.  That I am so not alone in this weary walk.  That God can bring me through incredible circumstances.  That God can use our lives for His glory and others' benefit too.  I reconnected with my God and felt more confident in my own abilities as a mother.  Being reminded that I am not perfect, I will make mistakes, this road is hard, and the other moms around me aren't perfect either (in fact they are probably just as weary as I am) me makes me feel more empowered and encouraged!

So I thank Stacey and Brooke for sharing their lives with us.  I thank Megan for leading this year's study.  And I pray for you, Weary Mom, that you may find hope and hold on to it with everything you've got.

Many blessings,
Meaghan

In Christ Alone

The words from this song really spoke to me in church today. Try an internet search to listen today.

"In Christ Alone"

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

**I found the words through a quick Google search but there are probably some official ones somewhere. http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nataliegrant/inchristalone.html

Bringing God your mess

I know I haven't written for a very long while.  I still haven't fixed my issue with the photos on this blog, but I'll get to it.  After Christmas (which was wonderful by the way), we got a nasty cold that lasted about 3 weeks.  So now I'm back and will write when I feel inspired to do so.

Do you know when you hear or see the same message several time. Well I'm feeling inspired to jump in and share with all of you what God has been teaching me this week.

If you haven't heard about this book yet, I highly recommend you head over right now.  Hope for the Weary Mom: Where God Meets you in Your Mess is the most amazing eBook.  It speaks right the the heart of moms everywhere. You are just in time to join in the the book study too!

Here are some great links:
Week 1 Why God Meets us in Our Mess
Week 2 When You Weakness is all You can See

So here is what I have been learning this week through this book, my quiet time with God, bible reading on other blogs like God Centred Mom and 5 Min for Faith.

1. I'm not perfect!  I know that's shocking but sometimes and moms we try to do it all and feel just awful when we don't measure up.

2. I am not alone.  There are so many mom's that are following along and sharing their stories.  It feels so good to know that we are all in the trenches of parenting together.  We often believe the lie that everyone else has it all together.

3. God will meet me in my mess.  I may not get answers right away, but when I call out to Him I can breath and take the next step.  There are many places in scripture that remind us to lay our burdens before the Lord and He is always with us.  Here is a great post on that I read today.

4. Satan keeps feeding me lies that I need to recognize and NOT believe them.  He tries to tell me I'm not good enough, I've messed up again, no one is listening, I'm alone and more.  But I'm learnings to rise above that and believe the wonderful truths directly for God our Father who loves me!!

5. There are so many people that need prayer.  Please feel free to leave a comment and know that I will spend time each day praying for you.  I know that others have prayed for me and it means so much to me.

So my thought are not too profound.  I hope you are able to see God working in your life today.
Many blessings to all,

Meaghan

What I'm learning along the way

What did I learn this week?

A whole lot!  Last week I discovered our need to slow down and I have been working on that (okay this week was a bit busier than expected).  The children are now clearing their places at the table and helping unload the dish washer.  We are more often tidying away toys before we move on.  I have also been reading lots of articles over at The Parenting Passageway.  I am trying to keep my own emotions and reactions in check, along with having more realistic expectations from my boys.  I am using a quieter voice when I can remember and I'm trying to help the children problem solve instead of reacting to the behaviour (like pushing).  So far it is going okay but no one ever warns you just how exhausting it is to be on top of things and in the moment all day long!  I am giving myself some grace and relying on God's strength each day.

In our home we strive to use gentle/positive parenting.  I am reading and learning more about it as we go along so I need patience with all of use as we often slip back to our old ways of shouting, threats, time-outs, punishments, etc.  It may not resonate with everyone but for us we see the benefits.  We want to model for our children how they should behave and how we want them to be as they grow.  Besides we've tried everything with our boys and when we push harder they push back and it all blows up worse.  Coaching and guiding (at least with TJ) seems to get a much better reaction.

Just yesterday as I was hanging our cloth diapers TJ came over to me and said: "Mommy my body told me that if I see someone doing work all by their self I should help them," and then he worked happily beside me.  Later in the day MJ had made a mess of the play kitchen.  On his own TJ started to put everything away with his toy loader.  I suggested that it was MJ's mess but TJ said he wanted to clean it. I need to treasure these moments (especially since he bite MJ really hard on the arm later that same day)

I have noticed that TJ is awakening to the idea that perhaps our bodies sometimes tell us to do the wrong thing and we need to think about our actions.  He is just beginning to get it, but has told me before that his body told him to do it (hit, bite...) and then we talk about how we should listen to God's voice instead.  I never imagined these conversation when I thought of having kids.  What a privilege to be part of their most intimate thoughts.

I am so thankful with where our journey is taking us.  In discovering Waldorf education I am really working on my own inner work.  The lessons and activities for the kids are not the end but just a means to provide some structure to our day and a platform to work on their development (sharing, movement, imaginations).  I do still need to figure out how to balance the daycare, company work, my own crafts, personal time, house work,  and everything in between.  I am just keeping my head above water most days and the business side of things is being sorely neglected.  Jon is also crazy busy with work.  We do look forward to things settling down a little.

This is the perfect time for me to be working on inner work, family and rhythms before we get into academics.  I am so glad to have this year to really enjoy our young boys and work on things now.

Hope things are going well with al of you.  I'd love to hear what you are learning!

Reshaping my vision

I was reading a post yesterday about casting a vision for my boys. I really have gotten into a bad slump, only focusing on the negative. I'm intentionally going to share a bit about my wonderful boys today. Let us work to reshape our vision for our children. I encourage you all to visit the MOB (Mother of Boys) Society to read some uplifting articles. There is the MOD Squad too for daughters!

Proud TJ and cousin baby James

TJ(4years) is very caring. When we were at our garden plot he sat with our droopy little lettus seedling encouraging it to grow. He also decorated the plot so that the butterfly we saw will come and visit again and be happy. TJ is imaginative and playful. He is always making his stuffed toys talk and includes them in our activities. Last night he dressed in his Lightning McQueen costume to go to the grocery store!

MJ (2years) is determined and independent (in a good way). He isn't quite 2 yet but has taught himself to ride his tricycle by watching his brother. He loves to try new things and doesn't give up right away. He will sit for a long time assembling wooden train tracks and playing happily. MJ makes me laugh. Throughout the day I often find he'll do or say something unexpected that makes me laugh. When I put him to bed he often sings silly songs and makes little faces at me.

I love my boys. I could go on for hours about them, and I do to anyone willing to listen. Thank you for the opportunity to share and remind myself of how wonderful they are!

I'd love to hear about the wonderful little people in your lives!

I hope to sell my upcycled creations and other unique items.  For now if there is something you like or think I can make, please contact me.

Advent activities days 3 to 5

We had a very nice weekend.
On Saturday we went to Main Street Christmas at a local church.

This is TJ dancing to the God Rocks concert.  He preferred the volume in the hall.  It worked for me because MJ kept running up on stage.

waiting for the wagon ride
inflatable slide
inflatable toddler area
The boys made crafts, cookies, played games and watched a concert.  There were more things to do, but keeping up with MJ was very exhausting.

On Sunday the boys were with my parents so they didn't open their stocking.  The plan was to donate.  We have a bag of things that the boys helped me to collect from around the house.  We'll drop that off soon.

Sunday night TJ and I had a sleep over.  He had been asking for a while and since we weren't busy  I agreed.  He sure does talk a lot and he needs a lot of "friends" in bed.  But we had a good night and a great sleep in (thanks MJ!!!)

Today we were going to make treats, but we'd done enough of that on the weekend.  So we made a garland made from old christmas cards instead.

To make the garland.  Just cut circles from old greeting cards and attach them to some thread using a sticker!

Count your blessings

This summer has been rather stressful for us.  We have been struggling to understand God's plan and our next step with work. We appreciate everyone's patience as we try to figure out what would be best for our family.  Through all of this we have been seeing God's blessings in many small ways.  Here are some things He has done for us recently.

* My wonderful parents took the boys for an overnight so we could get some work done on the house.  We managed to paint 2 rooms and prep some door frames for painting.  We also moved some furniture and had a nice evening together.

* The day we had to pay our company HST we received a long awaited payment from a customer to cover the taxes.

* We found an amazing kitchen hutch for free on the side of the road.  We have always wanted one but haven't had the money to splurge.  We are so thankful to God for this nice surprise!

* We have been blessed to spend so much quality time with the boys as we watch them develop and grow.  MJ is signing and talking so much.  The boys are playing together more often too.

* Sales at the grocery store on the items we need most.  Doesn't sound like much but it sure is nice when that happens.

* Scripture keeps coming to mind for both of us that we hadn't considered before.  We are trying to be more faithful and consistent with reading our bible.  It is wonderful that the Lord still speaks to us in many ways.  I've even read other blogs that hit right to what I needed to hear on a given day.

Awesome Ikea hutch we found free!

I'd love to hear how God is blessing you.

Happy 10th Anniversary

I just can't believe how fast time flies.  My wonderful husband and I have been married for 10 years!

We met at Ontario Pioneer Camp almost 14 years ago now.  Actually we had met before that becasue Jon knew my older sister, but we didn't formally meet each other until we were both working together.  Oh it is the usual adorable camp story.  He was a counsellor and I worked in the kitchen.  We got to know each other while at camp and then he came to visit me as I stayed on longer.  On our last day together he said he thought he loved me (my heat still races when I think about it).  We were not sure about how things would work out because Jon was 26 and I was 17 at the time.
Oh my did we really look like this so long ago?!
After camp was over we went on a few dates.  It is all the Lord's doing that we happened to live 15min apart. I moved to Japan for a year with my parents (my dad was working on an engineering project).  Jon and I email a lot!!! Again God's timing came in to play.  Jon got a night job and because of the time difference we were able to email in real time.
Our engagement photo
After being a part for a year we dated again while I started engineering at McMaster University.  We got engaged back at camp after dating for 2 years.  We were engaged for another 2 years.  During that time I think we probably over planned the wedding which turned out to be fantastic!!!

We were married August 3, 2001 (my parents have the same anniversary.  Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad too!)

Since then our lives, dreams, priorities, and everything else has changed so much.  I finished a degree in Manufacturing Engineering, went to teachers collage, taught grades 4 and 5 at a private school for a few years, and had 2 wonderful boys.  Now I am a stay at home mom who is also the office manager for our family business.  If the Lord is willing we'd like to homeschool our children.

Jon has worked as a Fire Alarm technician for several different companies, has also become a electrician, and started his own business (Integrity Fire and Control Systems Inc.).  We have also lived in a few rental places, my parents (twice) and are still renovating our house.  The house is nearing completion and we pray that the Lord will allow us to enjoy all our hard work so we stay here a little longer.  Our new priority is to our God, and our children.  We are continually trying to expand our company enough for me to stay at home and enjoy our time together as a family.

In all of our many wonderful year together we have learned that God is faithful, His timing is perfect (although He likes to be last minute with us to teach us patience).  Jon and I try to talk often to make sure that we are on the same page in many areas of our lives.  We try to be light hearted, humorous and care for each others needs.

I look forward to many more years together!

Monday Missions: Mommy Missions Website

Welcome to a new week on my new blog.  Every Monday I hope to share with you how God is working in our lives.  So lets get started...

Over the last two weeks I followed a Blog hop hosted by Heat of the Matter.  One of the blogs I read about was Mommy Missions.  Although I haven't subscribed to her website yet, I do love her blog.  I was gently reminded through this website and God's word that I don't need to go on any far away mission trip, that my mission field is right here at home.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.  Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.  Deuteronomy 6: 4-9

When I try to focus on putting the LORD first in our day, then anything else I happen to accomplish is a bonus.  I'll be the first to admit that some days I feel like everything (including the kids) are preventing me from getting things done.  The "things" I want to do are often just cleaning, or crafts and aren't really all that important.  I need to be in the Word daily to refocus my priorities.  I'm always working on this area in my life, and with two young boys it isn't easy, but I'll keep pressing on.
